This guide was one of the major projects in my first semester of UNT’s Master of Professional and Technical Communication program. I worked independently to create an iFixit Fast Fix guide demonstrating how to replace the battery in an HP Spectre x360 13-4193nr laptop. I chose this topic because I had previously replaced the battery after discovering it was swelling, and I wanted to turn that experience into a clear, instructional resource for others. Throughout the project, I collaborated with iFixit staff, receiving feedback on my proposal, written instructions, and step-by-step photographs. The guide was selected for publication on iFixit and has since been successfully completed by three users.
Challenge
The main tasks I completed while developing the iFixit Fast Fix guide include:
- Researched the HP Spectre x360 13-4193nr laptop model to ensure accurate identification of parts and compatibility of replacement components.
- Planned and drafted a detailed step-by-step instructional guide that aligned with iFixit’s technical writing and formatting standards.
- Captured high-quality photographs using a controlled lighting setup to ensure clarity, consistency, and instructional value.
- Tested the final procedure to confirm that each step was replicable, safe, and clear for a general repair audience.
The main challenges I encountered during the project include:
- Learning and applying iFixit’s documentation standards for tone, image composition, and procedural clarity.
- Ensuring precision in describing hardware components and tool usage while keeping the language accessible for non-technical readers.
- Coordinating the technical, visual, and editorial aspects of the guide to maintain consistency and compliance with publication requirements.
Results
My guide was selected for publication on iFixit, and three users have successfully completed the repair so far.
My Approach
Here’s how I approached the project to align with iFixit’s documentation standards and minimize the need for revisions:
- Carefully studied iFixit’s authoring guidelines at each stage of development to ensure the guide met all technical and stylistic requirements.
- Configured my photography setup using a Fujifilm X-T30 II, adjusting the white balance, shooting from a first-person perspective, using a white backdrop, and positioning two light sources to eliminate shadows.
- Researched the HP Spectre x360 13-4193nr battery replacement process in detail to confirm the most reliable and user-friendly method.
- Selected the appropriate tools and materials to recommend to users, ensuring accessibility and accuracy.
- Wrote clear, concise step-by-step instructions using plain language, breaking down complex actions, and avoiding unnecessary technical jargon.
